I am a self identified disorganized procrastinating college student. For years I have struggled to maintain a planner and jot things down in a timely and efficient fashion. I have purchased countless calendars, planners, and apps with a willful intent to stay faithful to these methods of organizing the craziness that is life. Um yea, to no avail.
Here is what I intuitively discovered over many years of trial and error. The power of 3 is real. There is something about the number 3, its simple and doable. One night while in bed I thought to my-overwhelmed-overtaxed-self “I will transfer three things from my “mental to-do list” to an index card and when I am done with the list I will throw it away”.
This idea has blossomed into the more eco-friendly method of writing three things on the front and three on the back. Yes, at the end I still dis*card* my index. You see what I did there? ;-)
I believe this index card/3 to do items system has proven effective for THREE reasons: (and the puns keep on rollin’ but no worries that’s the last one)
1. It forces me to prioritize in a tangible way
-Because only three things get to make it on the card, I am forced to figure out the most important tasks I need done each day. I am also not overwhelmed by a never ending to-do list that only motivates me to stall proactive behavior further.
2. It is easy to amend to-do items
-This method is flexible! For those creative and anti-confinement folks like myself, you will discover freedom in not having to be constricted to boxes, dates, and times. Just jot!
3. It’s SIMPLE
-This method is cheap, easy, and super compact. For those who don’t carry bags, simply slip your index card into your wallet!
-Who do those portable device apps and huge planners really work for anyways? We are taking it back to the basics right here!
-Oh and you gotta love the psychologically rewarding aspect of throwing away the index card when all to-do items have been accomplished. For fellow procrastinators it’s like getting your “feeling accomplished v-card” taken *romantic sigh*
